Why We All Need Good Design

Whenever I talk about good design it’s always about good website design.

Good design does so many great things for us all online.

Here are a few examples…

1. Good design creates a better first impression, it’s the first impression that counts online because your visitors have very little else to go on. So if your website looks like a dogs dinner what does that say about your product, do you see where I’m heading?

2. Good design makes people feel good, it creates a good atmosphere for people to interact with you through. Just as in my point above it’s that first impression people have about your website. Make them feel good with design that’s aesthetically pleasing to the eye.

3. Good design re-enforces the strength of your brand identity (and I don’t mean just your visual brand either). If you look professional, people will believe you are, perception is reality. Look at it like this… be the company/product/person you want to be and everything else will follow (Be-Do-Have).

4. Good design boosts your sales conversions, this is simply the byproduct of all 3 points above. But (and this is a very big but!) A really nice looking website does not equal a website that converts well. In fact it could work against the conversion process.

Why is this? Because whilst the website design might look great if it doesn’t follow the principals of direct response it’s a lost cause (assuming you want people to take some form of action on your website of course).

So there you have it, I firmly believe we all need good design to help us achieve better sales conversions. It’s not just about how well your copy is written.
