The #1 reason most people fail…

By Brian Terry on Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

Just the other day I was visiting a well known online marketing forums and I found myself reading one post after another from people struggling to create a successful website.

You know there has to be some fundamental underlying reasons why so many people just don’t “get it” and just fail.

The fact of the matter is most people who go online to make money never even make a single penny, and those that do usually end up making less than $100 a year. (I should know because several years back I was one of them, until I discovered where I was going wrong.)

I’m hoping that what I’m about to reveal will set the record straight and keep you from making the same mistakes I made.

Let’s take a look at the possible reasons for online business failure…

No product to sell or promote?
That can’t be it… there are thousands of products and services available on the internet for people to affiliate with and promote. For example I run a Big Selling Affiliate program that shows you what you need to do and gives you products to promote and make money from.

There’s a ton of software, e-books and programs available to teach you how to promote products and services.

In some cases all you have to do is implement the steps you’re shown, send traffic to their website and you’re ready to start making money.

Lack of knowledge?
That can’t be it, there is so many e-books and programs available on the internet that tell you anything you want to know and how to do it, that you get too much information.

Even for a beginner, there are programs that show you how to copy exactly what someone else has done and sell their product without learning anything. Why not become a Big Selling Intern and I’ll show you exactly step-by-step what you need to do, this is a perfect example of how anyone can get started for free.

The Internet doesn’t really work?
Wrong again, the internet is growing at a fantastical rate and is predicted to continue this growth for many years in the future.

The rules, laws and operating procedures for running an online business have been tightened up recently in some countries and could possibly even tighten-up more, but this will not stop the growth of the internet for many years to come if at all.

So, have you figured it out yet?

Why you MUST become fanatical at testing and tracking

By Brian Terry on Sunday, February 24th, 2008

It should be obvious to any person with some marketing experience online that there is no magic pill to success.

To be honest with you I’ve grown tired of reading email after email filled with claims on how easy it is to sell online.

Whilst this can be true, what many fail to tell you is there’s more to it than just putting up a website and driving traffic to it.

Are you ready for the “real” truth behind successful online marketing?

Here it is…

“Fanatically test and track everything!”

Let me say it again, it’s that important…

“Fanatically test and track everything!”

Before you get started with your testing and tracking you need to know what your website conversion rate is right now. This gives you a yardstick to measure future improvements to. In scientific terms this is called your “control”.

Knowing your conversion rate before making, say a change in your headline, is the only way to know for certain if the change made has a positive or negative impact.

And by split testing one headline against another you’ll soon find a winner that beats your control.

Here’s a word of warning… never make a steadfast change to your copy based on some other marketers advice.

This is critical and it’s where so many people fall over…

What works for them may not work for you too.

Plus, how do you know they’re not merely repeating some “mantra” they read or heard elsewhere?

A classic example of this is to make your headline a bright red color. Whilst in some markets this might be the “winning” headline color, in other markets it could fall flat on it’s face and reduce sales conversions massively. Can you see the importance of testing?

Whilst it’s true you can increase sales by increasing the traffic to your site, it’s not the easiest way to do it.

Let’s face it, increasing your traffic is either going to cost you more money or a lot of time and effort (certainly more than split testing and tracking everything to improve your existing sales conversions).

However, just throwing more traffic at your website without knowing your baseline conversion metrics means you’re leaving money on the table because you do not yet know the full potential of your sales process.

Let’s play with the numbers for a moment to give you a good example of what I mean…

Say you have a 1.5% conversion rate and 1000 visitors each week.

That’s equal to 15 sales a week. Not bad.

And each sale is worth $20 in profit.

1.5% x 1000 = 15 X $20 = $300 profit each week Now, increase traffic 50%… 1.5% X 1500 = 22.5 x $20 = $450 profit

Let’s step things up a bit…

Now you increase your conversions to 2.5% and send more traffic, let’s see what happens next…

2.5% x 1000 = 25 x $500 profit. That’s $200 more than in the example above and $50 more than sending more traffic.

Let’s send more traffic to our 2.5% converting site and see what happens with a 50% increase.

2.5% x 1500 = 37.5 sales x $20 = $750 profit each week. Replicate this over 4 weeks and your financial picture changes dramatically.

Always keep this in mind…

Only when you’ve got your sales conversion percentages as high as possible should you begin to consider increasing traffic. This ensures you get the very most return on your investment (ROI) in any marketing campaigns you run that send you more traffic.

Becoming fanatical at testing and tracking is the true path to online wealth.

To help you get started here are the testing and tracking tools I use and recommend you use too…

Google Analytics: www.google.com/analytics/

Google Analytics tells you exactly where your organic traffic is coming from, what pages people visit, how long they stay for and even how well it converts.

Google Website Optimizer: services.google.com/websiteoptimizer/

This other service by Google is integrated with Google AdWords, but don’t let this hold you back because you can use it by itself on any website you own and costs nothing to use. Google Website Optimizer enables you to run “split tests” where you test one website component against another automatically.

To access both these superb tools for free all you need is a Google Account.

17 essential “big selling” website strategies

By Brian Terry on Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Private label rights (PLR) products can be a real time saver if the quality is there too. Yesterday as I was searching through my emails there was one message that caught my eye. I took a closer look and it turned out to be an offer for a PLR package of 1,000 Secret Marketing Strategies.

Normally I’m a bit wary of PLR products because the quality isn’t usually that great and every man and his dog usually already has a copy stashed somewhere on their harddrive. Except in this case this product was created by someone who’s name I knew and who was selling a limited quantity. These 2 things alone usually point to something worthwhile.

So I though what the heck and purchased the PLR license to all 1,000 Secret Marketing Strategies.

This morning I’ve gone through a few of them and picked out 17 of the best big selling website strategies you can take advantage of right away…

1. The “Hard Way” Strategy

The “don’t buy this if you like to do things the hard way…” strategy tells your prospects indirectly that your product will give them an easy way to gain their desired benefit.

Believe it or not, many people continue to do things the hard way because they have a phobia about trying new things or using new technology.

You can ease their concerns by telling them if you (a doctor-diagnosed technophobia) can do it, anyone can do it.

(I used this “hard way” strategy in my last blog post here

2. The “It Could Be You” Strategy
The “this could be you: (a picture of a person benefiting from your product)…” strategy tells your prospects to imagine that they are the person in that picture.

For example, if you’re selling an Internet marketing type product, you could show a picture of a famous Internet marketer or a marketer holding a bunch of money.

3. The “Value Through Time” Strategy
The “since (month) (year), we’ve add well over ($) worth of (types of products/information)…” strategy tells your prospects that if they purchase your product package or membership site, it will just become more and more valuable over the months and years. You could even list every item you’ve added since that time.

4. The “Vanishes After Pre-Launch” Strategy
The “this bonus won’t be available after the pre-launch phase…” strategy tells your prospects the bonus won’t be offered if they wait till after the official launch starts.

You can tell them the date when the official launch begins, the retail value of the bonus and also mention the price of the main product will be lower during the pre-launch phase.

(I used something similar to this on the squeeze page for BigSellingConversions.com. I used a popup window with a countdown timer, as soon as the time runs out the page with the offer redirects and the offer is gone for good.)

5. The “Multiple Commissions” Strategy
The “(no.) ways to make commissions…” strategy tells your prospects that you offer multiple ways for them to make money with your affiliate program.

You could offer commissions on your front end product, upsell products, one-time offer, backend products, resell rights to your front end product, etc. You can tell them their link will be included in all your marketing communications pop-ups, members area offers, exit ads, etc.

(This is another strategy I use for my affiliate program here.)
